Margin Notes reads one book together every six weeks, but the thing that makes it unusual is the copies. Members annotate a physical book and pass it on. By the end of a cycle, a single paperback might carry the handwriting of eleven people disagreeing with each other across four years.
Online, the group runs a parallel thread for anyone who cannot get hold of the marked copies, or who prefers to argue in text.
The group reads widely and unglamorously — contemporary fiction, translated essays, one deeply unpopular poetry cycle that half the group still defends.
One physical book, annotated by everyone who reads it, then handed to the next member on the list.
Four weeks reading, one week arguing, one week off. The week off is not negotiable.
The last session of every cycle is reserved for the people who did not like it.
