The Long Way Home has a single premise: you were going to travel across the city anyway, so take the route that teaches you something. Walks are built around a feature — a set of public stairs, a stretch of old tram line, a street that changes name four times.
The group keeps a shared map of every route it has walked, annotated with the things that are only obvious on foot: which underpass floods, where the good benches are, which shortcut is a lie.
Pace is conversational by design. The group has members in their twenties and members in their seventies, and the route is always chosen so that everyone finishes together.
Every route is built around one thing worth seeing. No route repeats within a year.
Members add notes after each walk. Four years of them now, and it is genuinely useful.
The group waits at every turn. Nobody has ever been left behind on a route.
