The Kiln Club started when four people realized they were all paying separately to fire pots at the same studio on the same Tuesday. They pooled the cost of a secondhand electric kiln, put it in the back of a bike repair shop on Kettle Row, and agreed on one rule: whoever fires, unloads.
Most of what happens here is unglamorous. Members test glazes on tiles, argue about cone temperatures, and rescue each other’s warped bowls. Two or three times a year the group runs a beginner intake, where nobody is allowed to apologize for their work.
If you have never touched clay, this is a reasonable place to start. If you have been throwing for fifteen years, there is a shelf of glaze tests here that will still surprise you.
The kiln comes open in front of everyone. Successes and cracked rims get the same amount of attention.
Every glaze test gets pinned to the wall with its recipe. Four years in, it is the most useful object the group owns.
